15 years ago some Italian researchers stopped people
in the street and took an ultrasound pictures of their neck arteries.
They also took blood cholesterol tests and found that the ‘furring’ of
arteries (a process called atherosclerosis, responsible for coronary
heart disease) was in no way related to the blood cholesterol level.
At the Cardiac Centre our research has confirmed this but has also shown
that neck artery scan also predicts the presence of coronary
artery disease. Because this is a harmless and easily repeatable test
it is very useful for both routine screening as well as the evaluation of
preventative interventions such as exercise, diet and statin drug
admininstration.
We are now in a position to say that any cardiac screening examination
without a carotid artery (or other arterial ) scan is incomplete and lacks
any useful predictive power.
